Past Events Campus Lake Signs
Six signs have been designed and put around Campus
Lake informing the public about improvements that have been completed as
part of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Lakes Program.
The signs are currently being reviewed by the SIUC Engineering Services and
will hopefully be in place by the end of 2008. Lake improvements and sign
topics include bank stabilization and a new fishing pier, lake aeration,
fish community management, Horticulture Pond improvements, sediment
retention basins, and a stormwater wetland. These improvements were
completed to improve angler access, decrease nutrient inputs to the lake,
decrease nuisance algal blooms, and improve Campus Lake as a fishery.

Urban Fishing Program
The Urban Fishing Program (UFP) is an IDNR-sponsored, state-wide project geared toward teaching youngsters how to fish. The program offers free fishing clinics to show kids the basics and the opportunity to give fishing a try in a safe, supervised setting. Our members taught children between the ages of 5-12 how to bait hooks, throw the line, and handle fish correctly. The program also includes some informal instruction on the importance of responsible outdoor recreation. The SIUC Subunit has spearheaded the UFP in Carbondale for the past two years, and in 2005 our members donated approximately 40 hours of volunteer service to the program.
AFS Newsletter Publication Our Subunit is proud to publish two newsletters on behalf of AFS Sections. Subunit President Jesse Trushenski and Immediate Past President Rob Colombo serve as editors of the Fish Culture Section and Fish Management Section newsletters, respectively. These newsletters act as communication links between section leadership and members, as well as provide timely, relevant news items to the readership. In 2002, the Management Section honored the Subunit with an award of excellence in recognition for their continuing work with the newsletter. Recently, Ms. Trushenski and incoming Subunit President Heidi Lewis have agreed to serve as co- editors of the IL Chapter newsletter, adding a third newsletter to the stable of Subunit publications. We are pleased to offer our student members the ability to be involved with AFS at the section level, and commend our student editors for their hard work and dedication.
Ballot Committee Our Subunit is also serving AFS at the national level, with members serving on the 2006 Ballot Committee. Committee members Kelly DeGrandchamp, Rob Colombo, and Jesse Trushenski will be responsible for tabulating and reporting the results of the 2006 election to Society leaders and national office.
Fishing Derby
The second annual SIUC Student Subunit of American Fisheries Society fishing derby
occurred during the month of April, 2008. Hundreds of fish, including largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, channel catfish, and others, were tagged and released back into Campus Lake. Scores of participants were expected to fish the lake during the month-long derby. When a tagged fish was caught, the tag was cut off and submitted (each participant is allowed to bring in multiple tags); at the end of the tournament a drawing took place for over $300 worth of prizes donated by local and national businesses. Donations were made by Cabela’s, Dunn’s Sporting Goods in Marion, and the Great Outdoor Company in Carbondale.

Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge clean-up for Earth Day
On Earth Day 2006, the subunit volunteered its time to help a local organization, Beautify Southern Illinois, remove litter from the roadsides of Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge. The subunit's members collected trash from a 2-mile stretch of Little Grassy Road next to Little Grassy Lake. Based on the popularity of this event, the subunit is scheduling similar clean-ups of local waterways and public areas for later this summer.
Fish Identification at Trail of Tears Junction
Members of the subunit traveled to Trail of Tears Junction in Anna, IL to identify the fish living in their 5000 gallon aquarium. Then we made a laminated pamphlet showcasing the fish complete with pictures and a short write-up on each species.
Annual Meeting of the IL Chapter Our members were actively
involved in the organization of the 2006 annual meeting of the IL Chapter, held
March 7-9 in Whittington, taking responsibility for meeting registration and
ticket sales for the annual raffle. Our Subunit also participated in the raffle
by soliciting donations in the months before the meeting, and by helping conduct
the final drawing. Subunit members also organized an outreach display to provide
information about the aquatic research being conducted by the SIUC Fisheries and
Illinois Aquaculture Center (FIAC). The display included posters describing
ongoing SIUC research in toxicology, genetics, fisheries ecology and management,
and aquaculture, as well as brochures and pamphlets detailing the FIAC
facilities and graduate program. A job/resumé posting center also provided the
opportunity for potential employers and employees to connect. In addition to our
various administrative roles, our Subunit was well-represented in terms of
contributed presentations at the meeting, with ten students presenting their
research.
IL Junior Science and Humanities Symposium.
Always willing to help with SIUC science and outreach events, several of our members volunteered with this program aimed at introducing children and young adults to the research environment at SIUC.
